Coverage Options and Cost
Medicare supplement Insurance, also known as "Medigap", is designed to help cover the costs that Original Medicare (Parts A and B) doesn't fully pay.
These plans are offered by private insurance companies and help reduce your out-of-pocket expenses like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance, giving you more predictable healthcare costs.
Original Medicare covers a large portion of your healthcare, but not everything. Medigap plans help fill in those gaps, including:
Hospital deductibles and coinsurance (Part A)
Doctor visit coinsurance and outpatient costs (Part B)
Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
The first three pints of blood (if needed)
Emergency care while traveling outside the U.S. (within plan limits)
Important:
Medigap plans do not include:
Prescription drug coverage (Part D)
Dental, vision, or hearing benefits
Long-term care
Medicare Supplement plans are standardized by the federal government, which means:
A Plan G from one company has the same medical coverage as Plan G from another company
The difference comes down to:
Price
Customer Service
Company Reputation
Plan G
Covers nearly all out-of-pocket costs except the Part B deductible
Most popular option for new Medicare beneficiaries
Great for people who wat strong, predictable coverage
Plan N
Lower monthly premium than Plan G
Small copays for doctor and ER visits
Good option if you're okay with a little out-of-pocket cost to save monthly
Plan A
Basic coverage option
Fewer benefits compared to other plans
Typically chosen by those wanting minimal coverage
Plan F
Covers all Medicare-approved costs
Only available to those who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020
Medicare Supplement (Medigap):
See any doctor nationwide that accepts Medicare
Very little out-of-pocket cost after premiums
Requires a separate Part D plan for prescriptions
No network restrictions
Medicare Advantage (Part C):
Typically uses provider networks (HMO/PPO)
Lower monthly premiums but higher usage-based costs
Often includes prescription drugs and extra benefits
Has an annual out-of-pocket maximum
Medicare pricing can vary based on several factors:
Age
Location
Insurance company you choose
Health (if applying outside your enrollment window)
Typical Monthly Ranges:
Plan G: around $100 - $300
Plan N: around $80 - $250
Even though coverage is standardized, prices can vary, so comparing options is important.
The best time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period
Starts when you are 65+ and enrolled in Part B
Lasts 6 months
During this time:
You cannot be denied coverage
You cannot be charged more due to health conditions
If you apply later, you may have to go through medical underwriting
